Phan Rang Tour - A Day in Panduranga

Phan Rang – Tháp Chàm in Ninh Thuan Province is located far away from Ho Chi Minh City about 350 kilometers and from Pandanus Resort, Mui Ne about 122 kilometers. It was the old Panduranga, when the Viet annexed the final Cham political capital, the name of the principal city was changed to Phan Rang-Thap Cham. Their “towers” (“Thap”) are beautiful memorials to their kings and queens. Although most of the towers between Da Nang and Phan Thiet are in ruin, there are two sites in Phan Rang-Thap Cham that are maintained and culturally active. The towers are currently still in use for many of the colorful Cham festivals and celebrations.

  • Po Klong Garai Tower – The towers were erected by King Jaya Simhavarman III to honor the legendary King, known as the “protector”, Po Klong Garai (1151-1205) for his good deeds and for developing agriculture and constructing irrigation systems throughout Champa. His likeness is depicted on a lingam in the sanctuary of the central tower (The lingam is a symbol of divine generative energy, especially a phallic object as a symbol of Shiva)
  • Po Rome Tower – It was built in 17th century in Ninh Phuoc district, 15 kilometers from Phan Rang. This is one of the biggest towers of the Cham people, and is also the final one to be built in Champa. This tower was not created to worship any god, but rather to King Po Rome (1627-1651), the last king of the independent Champa Empire.
  • My Nghiep Weaving Village – This village is located in Ninh Thuan Province, 10 kilometers outside of Phan Rang City, has a reputation for its high quality weaved products and well-preserved Cham culture. Over the years, the local Cham have developed techniques to weave brocade according to a traditional method.
  • Bau Truc Pottery Village – This pottery craft village has existed since the reign of Cham King Po Klong Garai and is considered one of the oldest pottery villages in Southeast Asia. The hand-manipulated techniques they use have been passed down from generation to generation, which make the products remarkably distinguish themselves from others.
